St. Thomas Renovation
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
2018
Bridging the Gap
St. Thomas Cathedral and the St. Thomas Mission House—both historic masonry buildings over 100 years old—underwent a major renovation to improve accessibility, safety, and functionality, all while preserving their historic character.
At the heart of the project is a new glass-enclosed atrium that connects the two buildings. Framed in black steel and topped with a curved metal roof, the atrium brings in natural light and creates a bold contrast between old and new. It enhances circulation and provides a welcoming, transparent connection to the surrounding landscape.
Inside, the layout was updated for better efficiency and ease of use. The renovation includes a new warming kitchen, larger ADA-compliant restrooms, updated lighting, finishes, and modern casework. Together, these improvements ensure that St. Thomas remains a functional, inclusive, and inspiring place for the community—now and into the future.
