Bridging the Gap
The St. Thomas Cathedral and St. Thomas Mission House, both masonry structures over a century old, underwent a significant transformation to enhance accessibility, functionality, and life safety while preserving their historic integrity. This thoughtful renovation introduced a new entry atrium featuring an elevator, seamlessly connecting the Mission House and improving circulation between spaces.
A key architectural intervention is the glass-enclosed atrium, which bridges the two historic buildings while creating a striking contrast between old and new. Framed by black steel and capped with a curved metal roof, the atrium floods the interior with natural light, offering an inviting and transparent connection to the surrounding landscape. The design respects the historic brickwork while introducing a contemporary element that enhances the overall user experience.
Internally, the layout was refined for efficiency and usability, incorporating a new warming kitchen, expanded ADA-compliant restrooms, updated finishes, lighting, and casework to meet modern standards. This project successfully honors the past while embracing the future, ensuring that St. Thomas Cathedral and its Mission House remain functional, welcoming, and accessible for generations to come.
